The majority of my work is documentary style with natural light or bounced flash. I rarely get to play around in the studio. This week I did some portrait work with my friend Brendan, and am very pleased with the results.
Here’s one. It’s lit with two elinchrome soft boxes, one either side, and a small strobe at the back. It’s shot at f6.7 and 250th of a second at ISO 100, using a Nikon 85mm f1.8. I like the natural softening of the focus on his ear and left eye, showing that at this focal length even f6.7 gives quite a narrow depth of field. The wall was white, but I leaned the white balance towards green, so it has a greenish greyish hue.
Always good fun to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Practice practice practice!
